Matapieza is the artistic alter ego of María Rosa Izquierdo Blanco, a Cuban performer, writer, and model currently based in Maldonado, Uruguay. Self-taught and autobiographical, her practice combines creative writing, acting, photography, costume design, and scenography in scripted live performances shaped by her own visual and conceptual language. Her work explores how physical spaces influence individual development, imagining the city as a living entity that interacts with those who inhabit it. Through this perspective, her performances intertwine reality and fiction, historical figures and everyday rituals, often engaging directly with the places where these narratives emerged. Rooted in the underground art scene, her work has been presented in cultural and independent spaces throughout Havana, including Centro Cultural El Sauce, Café Miramar, Ona Galería, and Malecón 663. She has collaborated with photographers Verónika Louba, Claudio Fuentes, and Senen Tabares; musicians including Los Boys, Cimafunk, Yongolailan, and Yordis Toledo; and, more recently, curator and art critic Enzzo Hernández. Her long-term collaboration with Yongolailan grew from a shared exploration of artistic and personal identity, culminating in 2024 at Malecón 663, where, with the sea of Havana as their backdrop, they reinterpreted the founding of the city through performance and music.
